Give Me Your Hand: Creating a Caring Communit

March 19, 2010 (Fri)
6:15 pm - 8:00 pm

Location: Kol Emet

Pot Luck Dinner and Presentation

When families and individuals are struggling with acute and long-term illness, helping takes dedication, compassion, and organization. As a caring community, we take pride in reaching out to one another in times of need. There is much to be done on the practical level, as well as providing spiritual and emotional support to help others overcome the fear and isolation that are often part of the experience. On Friday evening, March 19, beginning at 6:15, the congregation is invited to join together for Shabbat dinner, followed by teachings on Bikkur Holim (Visiting the Sick), by Rabbi Elisa Goldberg. Rabbi Goldberg is the Director of the Joan Grossman Center for Chaplaincy and Healing of the Jewish Family and Children's Service of Greater Philadelphia. Rabbi Goldberg will lead us in a study of traditional Jewish text that have helped generations find the strength, healing power, and hope in times of need. Illness touches all our lives. Whether you are a person struggling with illness or a caregiver, we invite you to come and receive nourishment for your body and soul. Rabbi Cove will follow the program with a Shabbat service. As part of the service, Rabbi Goldberg will lead the congregation in a healing service for comfort, strength, and peace to those who are struggling through illness, and those providing care. Rabbi Goldberg graduated from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in 1999 and Cornell University in 1990. She completed her Clinical Pastoral Education at Abington Memorial Hospital. She has worked as a chaplain in acute and long-term care facilities. In addition, she currently serves as a Spiritual Director at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. A potluck Shabbat dinner will begin at 6:15. Please contact Pete Forest at phforest2003@aol.com or 215-431-7405 if you can bring something for the dinner. Rabbi Goldberg will begin her presentation at 7:00pm, with Shabbat service to follow, beginning at 8pm. Cost: No cost for members, $5 for non-members. RSVP by Thursday, March 18: Kol Emet Office (office@kolemet.org or 215-493-8522). Questions: Peter Forest (phforest2003@aol.com)
